Kaikoura is gelegen in een schitterende omgeving aan de baai van de oostkust van het Noordereiland.  Dankzij het zeer diepe water, het samenkomen van de warme subtropische golfstroom en de voedselrijke koude poolstroom vind je er een rijkdom aan verschillende zeedieren. Kaikoura is dan ook één van de beste plekken in Nieuw-Zeeland om walvissen, orka’s, dolfijnen, geeloogpinguïns, zeevogels, zeehonden en pelsrobben te spotten.

Als je in Kaikoura bent, is het zeker aan te raden om met een boot de zee op te gaan. En je weet niet wat je mee maakt. Zelf heb ik ook wel vaker een boottrip gedaan om dolfijnen te spotten, maar echt dit is heel wat anders. Honderden dolfijnen om je heen die je verwelkomen met een sprong. Er is ook maar een organisatie die deze boottocht aan biedt: Dolphin Encounter. Aan te raden is dan deze trip ook ver van te voren te boeken. Anders heb je kans dat het vol zit. Doordat het kleinschaliger is, voelt het ook minder toeristisch aan. Tijdens deze boottocht kun je ook met dolfijnen zwemmen.

Met het plaatsje Kaikoura zelf had ik verder niet zoveel mee. Ik vond het een te hoog backpack en surf gehalte. Kaikoura is verder dan ook gericht op dit toerisme. De omgeving is wel heel erg mooi!

Aan te raden is om buiten het toeristische gedeelte van Kaikoura te overnachten. Mooi is om te overnachten in de heuvels bij Kaikoura. Wij werden bij het wakker worden verrast door de mooie zonsopkomst. Vanuit onze kamer hadden we waanzinnig mooi uitzicht over de zee.  Aan te raden is Manakau Lodge. Mooi kleinschalig hotel met een persoonlijke gastvrijheid.
