Rondreis Nieuw Zeeland

Februari 2017 ben ik in Nieuw Zeeland geweest. In Nieuw Zeeland is de filmtrilogie van Lord of the Rings opgenomen. En echt als je die films hebt gezien, herken je Nieuw Zeeland meteen. Waanzinnig mooie landschappen verdeeld over twee eilanden die samen Nieuw Zeeland vormen. Op het Noordereiland tref je vulkanen en geisers aan. Dit rondom de streek van Rotorua. Daar vind je ook regenwouden. De prachtige stranden en baaien zijn gelegen in het Noorden van het eiland bij de Bay of Island bij de plaatsjes Russell en Whangerei. Op het Noordereiland zijn ook de steden Wellington en Auckland gelegen.
Het Zuidereiland is ruiger en er is veel ongerepte natuur met veel azuurblauwe meren, fjorden, gletsjers en flinke bergtoppen. Dit is ook het gebied waar je walwissen en dolfijnen kunt spotten. Eigenlijk heeft Nieuw Zeeland alle soorten natuur en landschappen die er zijn in de wereld. Dit maakt Nieuw Zeeland dan ook zo bijzonder!
In de drie weken dat wij er waren hebben we lang niet alles kunnen zien van het mooie Nieuw Zeeland. Wel zijn we op zowel op het Zuidereiland als het Noordereiland geweest. Hieronder lees je mijn ervaringen en tips voor een rondreis door Nieuw Zeeland.

De vliegreis
Ja Nieuw Zeeland ligt net nog iets verder dan Australië en dus heel wat uurtjes vliegen vanaf Amsterdam. Een reis naar Nieuw Zeeland is altijd met een overstap. Met een intercontinentale vlucht is het fijn om business class te vliegen en zeker een lange reis naar Nieuw Zeeland. Wij vlogen met Quatar Airways.

Kaikoura

Wij begonnen onze reis bij Kaikoura. Kaikoura ligt in het Zuidereiland van Nieuw Zeeland. Kaikoura staat bekend om de plek om walvissen en dolfijnen te spotten. Deze plek is dan ook de plek om met dolfijnen te zwemmen. In Kaikoura kun je een boottocht boeken, waarbij je met dolfijnen kunt zwemmen en walvissen kunt spotten. Wij hebben zelf ook een witte haai gezien.

Aan te raden is om te overnachten bij Manakau Lodge in de heuvels bij Kaikoura en dus niet in het stadje zelf. Manakau Lodge is een kleinschalig hotel waar je heerlijk kunt genieten van het mooie uitzicht van de heuvels en de zee. En je wordt zeer gastvrij ontvangen.

Wijnstreek Marlborough

Marlborough is een prachtige wijnstreek en ligt in het uiterste noordoosten op het Zuidereiland. Uit dit gebied komen de beste wijnen van Nieuw Zeeland. Blenheim is de  bekendste stad in het wijngebied. Aan te raden is om hier naar de verschillende wijnmakers te gaan en hier lekker te lunchen.

Wij zijn naar Rock Ferry geweest. Hier hebben ze trouwens de beste taartjes. Dus die moest ik ook wel even proeven.

In dit wijngebied kun je naast de beste Sauvignon Blanc ook genieten van het mooie landschap. Je raakt niet uitgekeken. Achter de wijngaarden liggen de mooie heuvels.

Onderweg met de auto kom je trouwens ook de mooiste landschappen tegen, dus het is ook vaak even een stop voor een mooi fotootje!

Oversteek naar het Noordereiland

Vanaf het zuidereiland hebben we de oversteek naar het noorderieland per ferry gedaan.  Vanaf het plaatsje Picton maak je de oversteek naar Wellington op het Noordereiland. De oversteek duurt ongeveer 3 uur. Vanaf het dek heb je prachtig uitzicht op de fjorden van de Marlborro Sounds. Hier kun je genieten van de kleine beboste (schier-) eilanden en het groene, uitgestrekte berglandschap. Het uitzicht is echt prachtig!

Wellington

Vanaf de ferry kom je gelijk aan in Wellington. Wellington is gelegen aan een natuurlijke haven bij de Cook Strait. Wellington is de hoofdstad en het culturele hart van Nieuw-Zeeland. In de stad hangt een relaxte sfeer. We sliepen in een hotel direct aan de Waterfront van Wellington met prachtig uitzicht.

Vanaf Wellington kun je eigenlijk veel lopend doen. De meeste bezienswaardigheden en attracties liggen namelijk dicht bij elkaar. Wellington heeft ook stranden. Het populairste strand van Wellington is Oriental Bay Beach. Oriental Bay Beach ligt op een paar minuten lopen vanaf het centrum. De lokale bevolking beschouwt dit gebied als hun eigen kleine Rivièra. Dus wil je ook even relaxen op het strand en genieten van de zon ook dat kan in Wellington.

Het bruisende Wellington Waterfront vormt het hart van de stad. Langs de Waterfront Boulevard vind je diverse musea, trendy winkels, kunstgaleries en leuke restaurants. Wellington heeft trouwens heel veel leuke restaurantjes. Helaas was ik er te kort om alle leuke hotspots te kunnen proberen. In Wellington heb je veel fine dining restaurants. Wij hebben bij de Whitebait in de Waterfront gegeten. Dit restaurant is echt een aanrader. Hier kun je een avond culinair genieten. Whitebait is een van de betere restaurants in Wellington. Dit restaurants heeft ook de lekkerste desserts. Die wilde ik als dessert liefhebber wel proberen natuurlijk. Andere goede fine dining restaurants in Wellington zijn Logan Brown Restaurant, Ortega Fish Shack, Jano Bistro en Hippopotamus Restaurant & Cocktail Bar.
Wellington heeft sowieso veel leuke restaurants. Een andere aanrader van een leuke hotspot is het restuarant Olive met een schattige tuin aan de achterkant. Olive is gelegen in Cubu Street. In deze straat vind je veel restaurants.

Vanuit Wellington zijn we richting het Rotorua gereden. Onderweg kom je weer heel veel verschillende landschappen tegen.

Rotorua

De stad Rotorua ligt op het Noordereiland en heeft ongeveer 55.000 inwoners. De grootste attracties in en rondom Rotorua zijn de spuitende geisers, stomende warmwaterbronnen en exploderende modderpoelen. De stad ligt op een vulkanisch gebied wat het grote aantal bronnen verklaard.

Veel toeristen komen dan ook op deze prachtige natuur af. In 2002 en 2006 werd de stad zelfs benoemd tot mooiste stad van Nieuw-Zeeland en kreeg Rotorua de ‘New Zealand’s Most Beautiful City Award’. Een nadeel van de bronnen is de geur. Door de gassen die vrijkomen bij de geisers en poelen kan het stinken in de stad. Maar dat mag de pret niet drukken, want het is werkelijk een spectaculair gezicht als je één, of meerdere, bronnen bezoekt. Je kan door verschillende parken wandelen. De bekendste ‘thermal valley’  is Te Puia. Dit is meteen ook de bekendste bezienswaardigheid in Rotorua.

Lake Tarawera

Verder liggen rondom Rotorua veel meren. In totaal zijn het er 16. Naast Lake liggen bij Rotorua de bekende meren als Lake Tarawera, Lake Rotoiti en Lake Rotoroma. Wij hebben overnacht in de Solitaire Lodge aan de Tarawera-meer. En wat een mooi uitzicht heb je over het meer! En in het meer zwemmen veel zwarte zwanen.

Tijdens deze dagen hebben we ook gewandeld in de Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest, waarbij je mooie watervallen tegen komt en prachtig kunt wandelen.

Movie set The Hobbiton

Verder zijn we een dag naar de stad Matamata geweest. Dit is het gebied waar de films van ‘Lord of the Rings’ en ‘The Hobbit’ zijn opgenomen. Het is de filmlocatie ‘Hobbiton’. De regering van Nieuw-Zeeland heeft besloten om een toeristische attractie van de locatie te maken. En echt het is een hele leuke ervaring om tussen de hobbit huisjes te lopen waar de film is opgenomen. Het is zeker de moeite waard om Matamata te bezoeken als je op het Noordereiland bent.

Hauraki Gulf Islands

Vlakbij Auckland ligt een groep eilanden die tot de mooiste ter wereld horen! Dit zijn de Hauraki Gulf Islands en deze liggen ten oosten van de stad. De populairste eilanden zijn Great Barrier Island, Waiheke Island, Kawau Island, Motutapu en Rangitoto Island en zijn per boot te bezichtigen en uitstekend om dagtochten te maken. Wij hebben het Kawau Island bezocht.

Whangarei Heads en de Bay of Islands

Om het noorden van het noordereiland van Nieuw Zeeland te kunnen ontdekken hebben we een paar dagen overnacht in het uiterste puntje van de Whangarei Heads. Dit is een prachtig schiereiland van 6000 hectare met sprankelnde witte zandstranden, kliffen en prachtige vergezichten over de oceaan.

Bij Kauri Mountain Point liggen een aantal luxueuze privehuizen die je kunt huren. Wij hebben overnacht in de Glasshouse. En wat een adembenemend uitzicht over de oceaan heb je hier.

Dit is een mooie uitvalbasis om het gebied rondom Whangarei te ontdekken. Zo is het aan te raden richting de Bay of Island te rijden. De Bay of Islands bestaat uit 144 eilandjes, baaien, bossen en zandstranden. Paiha, Russel en Waitangi zijn belangrijke plaatsen in de Bay of Islands, ongeveer een uur rijden vanaf Whangarei.

Auckland

Auckland is de grootste stad van Nieuw-Zeeland maar daarmee niet de hoofdstad van het land. Die eer gaat naar Wellington. Het feit dat je in de grootste stad van het land loopt is niet te merken als je in Auckland bent. Het is namelijk een zeer uitgestrekte stad want de meeste inwoners wonen liever in een huis met een tuin dan in een appartement.
Toch komt daar wel enige verandering in als je kijkt naar het gebied aan The Waterfront . Veel jonge hippe stellen willen daar graag wonen. Het Sofitel waar we hadden overnacht lag ook aan de Waterfront en ik snap wel dat dit stukje geliefd is!

Ook in de avond is het hier een gezellig vertoeven met een gezellig uitgaansleven. Ik was te kort in Auckland om alle leuke restaurtants en hotspots te bekijken. Ik had graag bij Clooney willen eten. Helaas zat deze vol. Een ander goed alternatief een een van de beste retsuarnats van Auckland is Euro Bar & Restaurant. Dit restaurant ligt aan de haven in een gezellige omgeving. En het eten is erg goed.

Het leven van Auckland speelt zich sowieso veel af rondom het water. Dat zie je gelijk door de velen zeilboten die in de haven liggen. Auckland wordt dan ook wel de The City of Sails genoemd. Auckland telt overigens twee havens die worden gescheiden door een rivier. In het westen heb je de Manukau Harbour die naar de Tasman Zee opent. In het oosten ligt de Waitemata Harbour, dit is de diepzeehaven.

Vanaf de haven kun je ook boot en zeiltochten maken en dolfijnen spotten of een bezoek brengen aan de nabijgelegen eilanden. Het is zeker aan te raden om lekker de zee op te gaan. En je zult genoeg dolfijnen tegen komen. Vanf de haven heb je ook goed uitzicht op de Harbour Bridge. De Harbour Bridge zorgt voor een aansluiting van Central Auckland met North Shore en is een symbool van Auckland.

Verder heb je vanaf de haven ook uitzicht op de meest in het oog springende bouwwerk van Aucklan: de Sky Tower. De Sky Tower domineert al 20 jaar de skyline van Auckland. De reusachtige toren behoort tot de hoogste gebouwen van het zuidelijk halfrond en meet in totaal 328 meter. Vanaf hier heb je een adembenemend uitzicht over de stad en de omliggende omgeving.
